23 April 2018

The UNICEF Climate comic book was launched in New York on Earth Day, 22 April 2018. We're excited that Earth Boy has now gone global and the comic book is also available online to everyone all over the world. Below is the front cover of the comic book.

Emerson collaborated with Wendy Conception, an illustrator in New York to produce the Earth Boy comic spread, which resulted in the awesome comic panel below. Click on the pictures below to read the comic.

The online version was also translated to Spanish, French and Hindi. You may read the full comic book here: http://www.comicsunitingnations.org/tre/

Visual map created by Emerson and Sheldon on how we can play our part to save the earth. It was featured by UNICEF Malaysia on their instagram in conjunction with Earth Day.

Repost from @unicefmalaysia - You don't need superpowers to save the earth! Climate Comic Contest finalist Emerson Chong and his brother, Sheldon created this cool infographic on how you can do your part

Update on Earth Boy comic panel project

17 April 2018

Update on Earth Boy comic panel project by UNICEF.

As mentioned in an previous post, Emerson was one of 3 finalists selected by UNICEF to produce a 1 page comic-panel as a bonus feature of the Climate Comic Book which would be published on Earth Day, 22 April 2018. The other two finalists selected were from France and Cuba.

In the beginning Emerson had an introduction orientation session with the representatives from UNICEF in New York. In another Skype session, Emerson was later introduced to the artist, Wendy Conception, who would be working with him on this project.

Top left: Emerson drew Jason, a kid scientist. (Jason later turns into Earth Boy when the potions he made to help the environment spilt on him.)
Right: Emerson with his dad, waiting for the Skype call from UNICEF in New York. The time was 8.30 am in the morning, and 7.30 pm the previous day in New York.

Subsequent communications were done via emails over the next few months. We received good news that approval was given to turn it into a 2-page comic spread. The script was discussed and refined with the artist. Then the artist started drawing Jason based on Emerson's concept, and then she drew the parents. (See below).

Throughout the project, Emerson would looks through the drafts by the artist and give his comments.

The artist will edit as necessary and revert. Here's Emerson giving his approval.

The artist has  now coloured in the panels.

Earth Boy will be featured in a comic book

Exciting news! Earth Boy will come to life!

At the end of last year, Emerson participated in the Climate Comic Contest organised by UNICEF. The winner was a 21 year old fine-arts student from India.

Today, we received an email from UNICEF that Emerson and 2 other finalists were selected to produce a 1-page comic panel that will be a bonus feature on the full length comic book on climate change, which will be launched on Earth Day 2018. The production of the comic will be done in collaboration with UNICEF and Emerson will be working with an illustrator to produce a one-page comic for Earth Boy. The process to produce the comic will be documented (interviews, photos, videos) and shared on social media and with media.
